Catriona and Matthew MacLeod have long been fans of Tornagrain – a brand new town Places for People is creating in the Scottish Highlands.

With friends already living in the neighbourhood, an opportunity came up in late 2020 for them to pursue their own dream of moving here. Now, the couple tell us about bringing their country ambitions to life.

Following friends and family

“We’ve always loved visiting Tornagrain” says Catriona, who along with her husband Matthew and young children, is now calling this Inverness neighbourhood home.

“We’re lucky to have friends already here, but we didn’t think we’d be able to join them until a change in circumstance allowed us to upsize.  We excitedly made the call to Places for People and explored what was available; the rest as they say is history...”

The best of both worlds

Friends aside, there were other factors pulling the family to Tornagrain – a whole new sustainable town which will ultimately comprise around 5,000 homes.

Catriona loves the open green spaces, but with a good balance of amenities that cater to family life; she continues: “We had long chased the dream of living in the country but wanted to be close to Inverness for work.

“For us, Tornagrain fitted that profile perfectly as we can enjoy the perks of country living while also being in walking distance of a shop, pharmacy, café and other amenities.”

The design of the development also resonated with the pair; fearful of cookie cutter communities, the couple saw something individual at Tornagrain, a blank canvas that they could make their own. “Other developments to us just look like someone has clicked copy and paste! They lacked space, and having young children, we just couldn’t make it work.

“Tornagrain on the other hand has been well thought out, planned and executed; it gives us everything we need – a nursery and play park – not to mention the clear sense of community that makes this a very friendly place to live!”

A well-designed home

Now this design conscious pair are putting the finishing touches to their Tornagrain home. Happy with their “bright and airy” blank canvas the family are well settled in. Catriona continues: “The rooms are spacious, and the high ceilings really give the place a feeling of grandeur. The houses are built to a very high standard and specification.

“We’re fortunate enough to have a garage which, in contrast to other developers, is actually full sized and not just an outdoor storage building. As we have young children we need a lot of space!

“Ultimately, we knew it was right for our family, with all the space we need. Our favourite room is the living room as nothing beats lighting the wood burning stove and immediately feeling cosy and at home.”
