“A wrong turn that led to the right home!”: Our newest residents Arthur and Joanna talk about the happy accident that secured their dream home

Arthur and Joanne have made the move from West to East, swapping Argyll for Inverness in their new home at Tornagrain – our new community packed with open green space and 5,000 new homes.

Here the pair talk about their frustrations in finding the right home – and how their daughter-in-law saved the day.

A fortuitous find

Arthur and Joanna had become frustrated with the pursuit of a new property. With time constraints against them, the couple – along with dog Archie – had hoped to downsize to a new build home in Lossiemouth, but was uninspired by what was on offer.

In between their work commitments, Joanna and her husband Arthur, had just a single weekend to view possible homes, but couldn’t find anything they liked: “All of the developments just looked the same; nothing stood out and we were so frustrated,” she says.

Not long after that weekend of searching, the couple’s daughter-in-law – who happened to work in Inverness – accidentally found herself driving through Tornagrain. “She wasn’t supposed to have driven that way, but ironically it was a wrong turn that put our search in the right direction!”

The Places for People process

The pair soon got in touch with Places for People’s sales executive Kieran, who swiftly showed them around. Joanna continues: “As soon we drove into Tornagrain we fell in love with it and just knew it was the right place for us to live. Kieran talked us through the development and the houses that were available for sale.”

As has become common in recent years, the pandemic threatened to hinder their plans, but it’s something Kieran safely and successfully helped them through. Joanna continues: “Kieran really did offer an outstanding level of service. We faced a few challenges that both the pandemic and Brexit brought; but Kieran worked really hard to keep us informed and updated throughout buying our new home – even on his days off.

“It was something mirrored by the site team who worked through the lockdowns and gave us updates whenever we were allowed to visit the site. The teams really have gone out of their way to ensure our home buying journey has gone as smoothly as possible.”

A smaller space, but a better lifestyle

After their tour, the couple opted for the ‘Petty’ – a three-bedroom home: “It’s perfect for us,” adds Arthur. “The house gives us enough room and storage, plus the added advantage of a car barn. We’re over the moon with the space we’ve got.”

The design of the home also appealed: “Although it is a new house, we got more than we bargained for and what you would see in a normal new build home; the ceilings are lovely and high and the layout of the house flows very well – it’s the attention to detail that we love.  The garden room is one of our favourite rooms – it will be a great place to unwind as we head into the brighter months.

“The house feels so warm and we are looking forward to the cheaper energy bills due to the increased insulation. And our son is very impressed with the super-fast broadband!”

A welcoming community

As the couple have relocated to Inverness, they were hoping to find a home in a real community, something Joanne says Tornagrain gives them: “It’s obviously somewhere that has been very well planned out.

“Whenever we visited the development to see the progress on our house we met so many different homeowners who have all been so welcoming, even inviting us in to see inside their homes.

“There is also a great mixture of ages with people our age and young families. We are looking forward to all the lovely walks around Tornagrain and getting to know this beautiful part of Scotland.

“It’s all so accessible and literally minutes away from Inverness airport, which will be ideal for our family visiting.  And there’s a great bus service too.

“But before we think about wandering off anywhere too far, we’re just so excited to be settling in and enjoying our new home. Thank you to everyone who’s helped us here!”
