Buying a new home is an emotive and challenging process, but to do it from hundreds of miles away raises the stakes even more. But the distance failed to deter Mr and Mrs Clark who used online viewings to select their new home at Tornagrain – a brand new town we’re creating in the Scottish Highlands.
Here the couple tell us more about setting up a new life for their family across the Channel.
A unique place to call home
“We moved back to Scotland after living and working in France for a number of years,” says Mrs Clark.
The pair set their sights on Tornagrain, a place in which Places for People is creating a whole new sustainable town, somewhere with open green space and 5,000 new homes. It was the individual character of this new neighbourhood that caught Mrs Clark’s eye: “We didn’t want to buy a property in a development of houses that all look the same. The design of the house is fantastic - the houses in Tornagrain are spacious and generally have a larger floor area than what other house builders we looked at were providing.
“We wanted character and amenities, with access to parks, shops, and other services – places we could reach by foot or on our bikes. It was an important factor for us as we don’t want to rely on a car for everyday living. Tornagrain ticked those boxes.”
France versus Scotland
Mrs Clark and her husband researched their property while living in France; from there they tried to visualise what this neighbourhood 900 miles from home would look like, and how it would compare to their Gallic lives. What she saw online appealed: “It looked like Tornagrain fitted perfectly,” Mrs Clark continued. “This is somewhere designed with long-term quality of life, not just for individual homeowners, but for the community as a whole.
“When we made the move and arrived back in Scotland it was immediately clear to see a lovely, growing community that we wanted to be a part of.”
The couple are equally as impressed with the home itself; as well as the aesthetics Mr and Mrs Clark were also keen on the sustainability credentials, with their property achieving a B rating on the EPC. “It gives us peace of mind to know that the houses are so well built and insulated,” she continues. “It’s impressive as it’s far above the rating of so many similar properties. Going forward that means we can live in a warm and dry house, with minimal carbon impact on the environment and with much lower bills than we have been paying in our houses previously. It’s a win win!
“We also love that the house is right next to a cycle path and footpath - great for our young kids and helping our family get about without needing to ride bikes on a busy road.
“Safe to say that Tornagrain is perfect for us and we can’t wait to build our lives here!”.
