In a roundabout way, life in Milton Keynes is ace.
There’s loads to do and plenty of untapped options for culture vultures who want to explore the town’s lesser known sites.
Here, we take a look at what’s on offer if you’re planning on moving to a new home at a development like The Square at Brooklands, or simply want to while away a weekend in the area…
There are plenty of national chain options when it comes to eating and drinking, but there’s also a wealth of independent coffee houses waiting to be explored.
Local writer Sophie Etc recommends the Bogota Coffee Company, The Cupcake Bar, ML and the MK Gallery’s Café. So grab yourself a seat and enjoy a tasty treat whilst you plan your day in MK.
We love the MK Street Food collective’s run down of the tastiest street food vendors from Milton Keynes, many of whom you’ll find out and about around the town each weekend.
From the Californian-Mexican fusion flavours of Baja Cantina, to Kaur Spice Indian delights, to Stu’s Oven woodfired pizza – and even Bokkie’s South African menu – there’s a tasty range of street foodies with great concepts made right here in our town. Specialist foodies cover for most requests too; vegans for example can head to A Vegative State where the ‘mac n cheeze’ is the Don!
For more info just head to each vendor’s website for details of when and where you can sample their creations.
For those who like the more conventional approach and want to sit at a table to eat their meal, fear not, there are plenty of tasty restaurants to choose from including; A French Affaire or Cameron’s Kitchen, both in Stony Stratford, The Old Swan at Astwood for highly acclaimed pub grub, and if you’re after a swanky and fun filled evening with the red carpet treatment (literally!) then head on over to The Dome which is situated in the heart of MK. Here you can enjoy a whole evening under one majestic roof, from dining, to cocktails, and then dance the night away – you can even get married at this beautiful Milton Keynes venue.
The residents of MK certainly have an eye for detail, and the artwork offerings of the area are most definitely worth a look. There’s MK Gallery – of which the building itself is a work of art. Beautifully designed by renowned architects 6a in collaboration with artists Gareth Jones and Nils Norman – the gallery has become an iconic feature of the city skyline. Internally you’ll find cutting edge contemporary art positioned alongside historical pieces, plus film showings, concerts, comedy nights and family friendly workshops – this place really is a jewel in the MK crown and you can even refuel at the café bar and enjoy a delicious bite to eat alongside and a nice chilled glass of wine.
And who hasn’t ‘herd’ about the MK Cows! The udderly awesome fivesome were created by Canadian artist Liz Leyh alongside local schoolchildren at the MK museum in 1978. After a stint grazing at intu Milton Keynes, they are now back home at the museum and sure to lighten any visitors’ moo-d!
There’s the Whitewall Galleries too – for lovers of innovative original paintings, collectable editions and sculptures. The art on display here is not only from internationally acclaimed artists, but from exciting emerging talents too.
Castle Galleries is also well worth a visit – which starts with a stunning window display before you even set foot in the building. Inside you’ll find the walls adorned with beautiful fine art and exhibitions featuring work from local talent plus worldwide pieces including the likes of Lorenzo Quinn and even Stan Lee’s Marvel super heroes!
For those who fancy a bit of theatre, there’s plenty to see and do in Milton Keynes.
Why not visit the Campbell Park Amphitheatre which is host to 200 events per year! Check out their list of events which includes plenty of family friendly performances. Just pick which event you fancy, pack up a picnic and head on down for some fabulous entertainment.
If you’re more an indoorsy type of audience member then the Milton Keynes Theatre is certainly the place for you. With an impressive ‘what’s on’ list which includes; dance, drama, musicals, opera, comedy and children’s shows. Additionally there’s The Marlborough Gate bistro – a stylish dining establishment within the theatre building, plus the Piano Bar which is the perfect place to enjoy a pre or post (or both!) theatre tipple and it serves up delicious food too.
Milton Keynes’ Centre MK shopping centre is a retail lovers delight – and just minutes away by car from The Square at Brooklands. With John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Champneys, Hawes and Curtis, Joules and more, there’s an appealing range of shops on offer for any residents looking for a wardrobe update.
